PLDT SVP and Gabay Guro Chairperson Chaye Cabal-Revilla is joined by Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez who entertained the audience with some of her greatest hits.

Marking 10 years of changing lives, PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF) and PLDT Manager Club’s  (MCI) Gabay Guro program celebrate the achievements of the new graduates of the scholarship program through Simpleng Handog 2017. These students are education majors graduating from different schools nationwide.

Gabay Guro is an education arm and a flagship project of PSF. It is a program run by volunteers composed of the PLDT Manager’s Club Inc. The program has six components: scholarships, training, computerization and broadbanding, teacher’s tribute, livelihood, housing, and educational facilities. In 2016, Gabay Guro supported 542 public school teacher scholars of which 155 graduated – 67 with Latin Honors. Moreover, 80 Gabay Guro scholars passed the Licensure Examinations for Teachers (LET).

PLDT SVP and Gabay Guro Chairperson Chaye Cabal-Revilla underscored the importance of the program as she reminded the students that being a teacher goes beyond classroom-learning. “Be the generation of change… teach them [future students] the right values to be the great Filipinos that God wants them to be in the future,” Cabal-Revilla said.

Keeping the torch burning
The 155 Gabay Guro scholars who attended the Simpleng Handog 2017 were treated to a night filled with scrumptious food, great company, and outstanding musical performances. Some of the celebrities who brilliantly sang in front of the scholar graduates include Robin Nievera, Queen of Soul Jaya, and Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid.

It was a night to be remembered as the stories told by two of the graduating scholars touched the hearts of the audience – bringing tears and laughter as they talk about their journey in pursuing their dreams of becoming teachers. One of which was Jeffrey Febrero.

Febrero, a graduating Magna Cum Laude scholar from Philippine Normal University – Isabela Campus, speaks beautifully of his struggle as he persevered in making his dreams happen. Raised in a humble home by his parents who work as farmers in Ilagan City, Isabela, Febrero always had a strong backbone that carries the weight of hard work.  “Despite all these struggles, I have always kept the torch burning within me – the eagerness and desire to show that I can, that we can,” Febrero said.

He expresses his heartfelt gratitude to PSF and Gabay Guro for supporting his dreams. “The scholarship paved the path for me to be able to support myself financially. Salamat po sa paggbay. Maraming, maraming salamat,” Febrero said.

The Generation Change
The new set of scholarship graduates set sail towards realizing their dreams. Behind their full smiles and grateful hearts, there lies some years of struggle to reach the place where they are now. PSF President Esther Santos delivered a message of finding hope amidst life’s difficulties. “You [students] are really the change and the future. And we really have a lot of hope in you,” Santos said.

With hard work, perseverance, and dedication, anything is possible. Despite life’s seemingly insurmountable challenges, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. In the end, the years of struggle will transform one to be the braver, kinder, and stronger generation of change that one is meant to be. CC:

JOCELYN L. REYES (09778402850)| Aug 25, 2017 PSF AND PLDT-MCI Gabay Guro program is one of the most relevant well-engineered programs for teachers. I just hope that this very generous program will also help us to get graduate studies. How I love to have a Post Doc, however, with a very meager take home pay, I can not afford to pursue a one-year Post Doctorate in Total Quality Management in Higher Education at CEU. Ms. Katrina Mallari, can you help me and a good friend of mine, Gemma S. Legaspi, by personnally relaying this to Ms. Chaye Cabal-Revilla? We both finish our PhD program by supporting ourselves and still in the process of paying the debts we had during our PhD days. We hope to finish Post Doc with the help of people with generous hearts.
